Signs Your uPVC Door Mechanism Is Failing (Before It Seizes Completely)

The warning signs of a failing uPVC multipoint mechanism — in order of urgency, so you know when to act and when to keep an eye on it.

Most uPVC door mechanism failures don't happen suddenly. They announce themselves, if you're paying attention. Here are the signs — earliest to latest — and what each one means.

What the mechanism actually does

When you lift a uPVC door handle, you're turning a gearbox cam that drives a series of hooks and bolts along the edge of the door into the frame. This is the multipoint locking mechanism — typically five to seven lock points up the door edge. The gearbox is the heart of it: a cast alloy case with a cam, rollers, and connecting rods that translate your handle movement into locking action.

When the gearbox wears out, one of two things happens: the cam strips and the handle moves but doesn't drive anything, or the rollers jam and the handle won't move at all. Both mean the door won't lock properly.

The signs, earliest to latest

Stage 1 — Occasional stiffness

The handle takes noticeably more force to lift than it did 12 months ago. The door closes fine and all locks engage. This is the cheapest problem on the list.

Action: Lubricate with PTFE spray (not WD-40). Check hinge adjustment. If it improves, great. If it's consistently stiff regardless of lubrication, the cam is starting to wear. Note it; don't ignore it.

Stage 2 — Grinding or clicking when locking

You can hear or feel a grinding sensation as the handle lifts and the locks engage. This is metal-on-metal wear inside the gearbox.

Action: Lubricate urgently to reduce friction damage. The mechanism will continue to work for some time, but it's deteriorating. Plan a replacement within the next few months rather than waiting for it to fail in the middle of winter. (It will fail in winter. They always do.)

Stage 3 — Handle stiff, but full locking still works

The handle takes significant effort to lift — sometimes both hands. But when it does engage, all the lock points work.

Action: Call a locksmith and book the replacement. It still works now, but the gearbox is close to failure. A booked appointment is better than an emergency call-out.

Stage 4 — Handle lifts but only some locks engage

Partial engagement: maybe the centre latch catches but the top and bottom hooks don't shoot, or vice versa. The door appears closed but isn't properly locked.

Action: Call now020 3780 8827. The door is not secure. This is a repair that needs to happen today, not this week.

Stage 5 — Handle moves but nothing happens

The cam has fully stripped. Lifting the handle produces no movement in the lock points. The door may close but it cannot be locked.

Action: Emergency repair. The door is unsecured. Emergency uPVC door repair.

Why not wait until it fails completely?

An emergency call-out costs more than a booked appointment. A booked appointment at Stage 2 or 3 is the cheapest version of this problem. Emergency call-out at Stage 5 costs more and takes longer because the locksmith also has to work around a door that's now jammed or difficult to access.

The gearbox replacement cost is the same either way. The call-out is not.

How long does a uPVC door mechanism last?

Usually replacing. Individual cams can sometimes be swapped, but once the gearbox starts to strip, repair rarely lasts. A new mechanism is the cleaner fix.

My handle is hard to lift in cold weather — is that the mechanism?

Thermal expansion causes uPVC to stiffen in cold weather, and a stiff handle in winter alone isn't necessarily the mechanism failing. If it's stiff year-round, or getting progressively worse across seasons, that's the mechanism.

The door locks fine but makes a grinding noise — should I be worried?

Yes. Grinding is cam-on-cam wear inside the gearbox. It locks now, but it won't for much longer. The mechanism is in the early stages of failure. Lubricate now, and start planning the replacement.
