What people ask before they book
What's the difference between a 1-star and 3-star British Standard lock?
All British Standard (BS 3621:2007) locks meet the baseline insurance requirement. Stars indicate resistance to attack: 1-star passes the standard; 3-star (also called Secured by Design or TS007) adds anti-pick and anti-drill certification on top. Most home insurers accept 1-star as minimum. If you've been burgled before or live in a higher-risk area, 3-star is worth the extra.
My cylinder can be snapped — how urgent is it to replace?
Cylinder snapping is the most common forced-entry method on euro-profile doors. It takes about 20 seconds with basic tools, bypasses the lock completely, and leaves no obvious external damage. If your current cylinder doesn't have anti-snap protection, it's worth replacing before it gets tested. We can usually do it same day.
Will a new lock void my insurance if it's not the right spec?
Only if your policy specifically requires a certain lock standard and you fit something lower. The safer question is: does your current lock meet your policy's minimum? Check your policy schedule — it'll usually say 'BS 3621' or 'approved 5-lever mortice'. If you're unsure, call your insurer with the lock brand and BS number and they'll confirm.
What locks do you use — will I be able to get replacement keys made?
We use branded locks from TSS, Yale, Union, Brisant, Ultion, Mul-T-Lock, and Banham among others. Higher-security locks use restricted key profiles — keys can only be cut by authorised dealers, which is a security feature, not an inconvenience. You'll get a security card with the lock that lets you order additional keys.
“Insurance company told me I needed BS 3621 locks after a near-miss break-in. John came the next morning, confirmed what I actually needed rather than the most expensive option, and fitted two cylinders. Happy with the job.”
“Rental property with four flats — wanted all front doors on British Standard spec before the next tenancy. Done across two visits, all documented, all warranted.”
