Questions

What people ask before they book

How long does a lock change take?

Most standard cylinder swaps take 20–40 minutes. A full mortice lock replacement takes longer — usually 45–90 minutes depending on the door and lock type.

Do I need to replace the whole lock or just the cylinder?

In most cases, just the cylinder — especially on euro-profile doors and most uPVC doors. If the lock body itself is damaged or you're upgrading security, a full lock change makes more sense. John will tell you which is needed before starting.

Will the new lock meet my home insurance requirements?

Most insurers require at least a 5-lever mortice deadlock (BS 3621) or a BS-approved cylinder on external doors. If you're unsure what your policy requires, check the policy documents or call your insurer first — we can then fit whatever meets the spec.

Can you change the locks on a uPVC door?

Yes. uPVC doors typically use a euro-profile cylinder, which is usually a straightforward swap. If the mechanism itself is faulty, see the uPVC door repair page.

Moved into a new flat in East Barnet and wanted all the locks changed before we unpacked. John was there the same afternoon, changed two cylinders, and left us three sets of keys. Exactly what we needed.

Old Yale on the front door was so worn the key had started catching. New cylinder fitted in under half an hour and the difference is night and day.
