Banham Locks Explained — Are They Worth the Money?
Banham locks explained — what makes them different, why they cost more, and whether you actually need one over a standard British Standard lock.
Short answer: Banham locks are genuinely well-built, and you're also paying for the badge. Whether that's worth it depends on what you're actually trying to buy — better security, or the reassurance of a name your insurer and your neighbours both recognise.
Quick answer
- Banham locks are British Standard 3-star rated — same insurance-grade security tier as several cheaper brands
- Part of the price is the hardware, part of it is the brand and the restricted key-cutting network
- Your home insurance policy almost certainly asks for "BS 3621", not "Banham" by name
- If you want the name on the door, it's a legitimate choice — just know what you're paying for
- Full high-security lock range and prices
What makes a Banham lock different
Banham has been making locks in London since 1926, and the locks themselves are properly engineered — hardened steel plates against drilling, anti-snap cylinders where relevant, and a restricted key system so copies can only be cut by an authorised dealer. That restricted-key part matters: it's the same reason a hotel master-key system works, and it's a genuine security upgrade over a standard cylinder that any hardware shop can copy.
(John's note: I've fitted a fair few Banham locks over the years. They do the job. I've also fitted an Ultion at a third of the price that does, on paper, the exact same job. Make of that what you will.)
Why Banham locks cost more than a standard British Standard lock
Three things drive the price up, and only one of them is really about the lock:
- The hardware itself — genuinely high-spec, no argument there.
- The restricted key system — you're paying for a dealer network that exists specifically so your key can't be casually copied.
- The brand — Banham has decades of reputation in London, its own retail shops, and a service model built around that. That costs money, and it's reflected in the price.
None of this makes the lock bad value. It makes it a considered purchase, not an automatic one.
Are Banham locks worth it for your front door?
Depends what you're solving for.
If the goal is meeting your insurance policy's lock requirement — a British Standard 3621 cylinder or mortice lock from Ultion, Brisant, Mul-T-Lock, or several others does the same job for less. Your insurer's wording almost never names a brand. See the 5 lever mortice lock explainer for what "BS 3621" actually covers.
If the goal is the badge, the restricted key control, and Banham's own after-sales service — that's a real reason to choose it, and there's nothing wrong with paying for it. Some of our customers specifically want it because it's what the last three houses on their street have fitted, and there's a genuine deterrent value in a visible, recognised lock brand.
Banham vs standard high-security locks — the honest comparison
| | British Standard 3-star (Ultion, Brisant, etc.) | Banham | |---|---|---| | Insurance compliance | Yes — BS 3621 | Yes — BS 3621 | | Anti-snap / anti-drill | Yes | Yes | | Restricted key copying | Varies by brand | Yes, dealer-controlled | | Brand recognition | Low | High | | Typical price position | Lower end of the range | Upper end of the range |
Full pricing for the whole British Standard range, Banham included, is on the high security lock installation page.
(To be clear: nobody's front door has ever been burgled because the lock on it wasn't famous enough. Security is security. The name just changes what your neighbours assume about your net worth.)
Getting a Banham lock fitted in Barnet
We fit Banham locks alongside Ultion, Mul-T-Lock, Yale, Union, and Brisant — you're not tied to a Banham-only locksmith for installation. You will need Banham (or an authorised dealer) for cutting a spare key afterwards, since the key profile is restricted. That's a one-time inconvenience most people never think about again after the first spare's cut.

Frequently asked questions
Why are Banham locks so expensive?
Partly the hardware, partly the name. Banham locks are built to a high spec — hardened steel, anti-drill, anti-snap where relevant — but so are plenty of other British Standard 3-star locks at a third of the price. You're also paying for the brand, the dedicated key-cutting network, and Banham's own retail and service infrastructure.
Are Banham locks worth it?
If you want the name on the door and the concierge-level service that comes with it, yes. If you just need to satisfy your insurer's lock requirement, a British Standard 3-star cylinder from Ultion, Brisant, or Mul-T-Lock gives you the same insurance-grade security for considerably less.
What type of lock is a Banham lock?
Banham makes several — a mortice deadlock range for timber doors, and cylinder locks for uPVC and composite doors. Both are built to be fitted alongside your existing lock as an upgrade, not always a like-for-like swap, which is part of why installation needs a locksmith who's fitted them before.
Can I get a spare key cut for a Banham lock?
Only through an authorised Banham dealer or locksmith with the right key-cutting equipment — the key profile is restricted, which is a security feature. You can't walk into a high street key-cutting kiosk and get one done.
Do I need a Banham lock for home insurance, or will a cheaper lock do?
Almost every UK home insurer asks for BS 3621 on external doors — full stop. They don't specify a brand. A British Standard cylinder or mortice lock from any reputable manufacturer satisfies the same policy wording as a Banham.
Can you fit a Banham lock, or does it have to be a Banham locksmith?
We fit Banham among the branded options we install — see the high security lock page for the full list. You're not restricted to Banham's own locksmiths for installation, only for cutting restricted keys after the fact.
